Salmon Makes For A Good Snack

Happy Saturday everyone. Just wanted to post on a snack I had one Saturday. The difference between raw and cooked salmon is night and day. Cooked salmon becomes fishy and dry. But it's the best when raw... so sweet and somewhat similar in fattiness/softness to hamachi (yellowtail).

I think salmon sushi is probably the most beautiful looking out of the common dishes. Ikura (salmon roe) is also nice to look at. The lines in salmon remind me of the marbling on a nice juicy steak. Mmm. Sometimes when I'm at Mitsuwa or Marukai, I'm tempted to buy a block of salmon and just eat it like a sandwich.

I got this block at Mitsuwa for like $5 and yielded nearly 18 small pieces of nigiri sushi. I put too much wasabi in between the rice and fish. Nose-hair fire!

What's your favorite kind of sushi?

Salmon or Otoro. The best place to get salmon sashimi, anywhere, is Sushiman. (Unfortunately it is in Issaquah, about 40 minutes outside of Seattle.) They use only wild, Alaskan salmon. It is delicious!
And both with plenty of Wasabi. I like the nose fire myself.

Hiya. Thanks for your Roald Dahl comments on my blog.

You know, I have to say I had some seared eel which I was skeptical of, and it turned out to be quite tasty.

I'm going to deviate from your question and say that I like sashimi more than sushi.
In terms of fish types, hands down Hamachi! :) Amaebi, o-toro and really fresh ika are also bonus. Have you had bucketloads of ikura over a bowl of fresh sushi rice (with some toasted nori and soy sauce)? So good! When I was young, I used to be obsessed with tobiko. I'd get my parents to order me tobiko sashimi and savour each bite of those little eggs stuffed into hollowed cucumber cups.

I also had the best o-toro and uni at Tsukiji Market one fine morning. Mmmm... If I could get that all the time, I'd list those in my above picks.

Salmon is probably my fave of the cheaper raw fish. -- even if counting pricier pieces it's a close runner-up to ootoro & chutoro. Of course, there's still the kid in me that craves the occasional tamago.

LOVE Salmon...and yellowtail...and tuna (with Ponzu). Do I have a problem?!?!

Uni! It must be uni. Mmm... So creamy and- Well, let's just leave it at that.

But when I make sushi at home, I usually go with the salmon too.

True. Cooking salmon can ruin a good piece of fish.

Favorite sushi: a tie between salmon and yellowtail.

hamachi has got to be my all time favorite. otoro, ama-ebi, and mirugai are close runners up. shoot, we just had a sushi fest at komasa and now this post is making me crave sushi again!

we've never tried buying sashimi from the store ourselves. gotta give it a try! =)

Hey EDBM - Did you ever purchase from International Marine in Downtown - that's where many of the sushi bars get their fish.

Light years better than what you can get almost anywhere. But you need tro get there early....I wish I did food blogging when I lived in LA - it would've been an interesting post.

I love scallop sashimi. I was skeptical the first time I tried it, but it is so sweet and tasty, mmm mmm. I'm also a big fan of temaki. Spicy salmon or spicy scallop temaki are my favorite.

And UNI of course!

My favorites are spicy tuna roll, crunchy lemon roll (tempura shrimp inside the roll), and dragon (eel) roll. Yum! Wish I would have read your blog before going to lunch. I'm in the mood for sushi now and my boring salad doesn't taste as good anymore.

Love the blog!

These pictures give me shivers. Beautiful. Salmon and otoro are my favorites. I wholeheartedly agree with you, raw salmon is best. The best have wonderful color, marbling and taste like butter.

Wow, this is great to see that almost everyone i interact with on this blog appreciates sushi. Salmon is definitely my favorite, with yellowtail and scallops (w/ pureed garlic and yuzu kosho) right behind. Surprisingly, a lot of ppl are solely about the nigiri and sashimi. I first started off as a roll person and haven't touched one in the last 4 years. Unfortunately, i cannot add toro/otoro/chutoro to my list because when I see the MP abbreviation...i know it's gonna be freaking expensive.

i also love eating ama-ebi, only the shrimp head portion. i could do without the actual shrimp. uni and monkfish liver (warm only) is damn good too!

If I had to pick, it'd be uni.

The Uni oozes,
Looking like frothy egg yolk.
It's sunny yellow.

Wet, cold and sexy;
The sea water saliva,
Of a mermaid's kiss.

Uni uni uni! (When it's good; otherwise it's pretty nasty) That said, I do love scallops, and of course amaebi.

Ah-something I can really relate to, sushi. Well my friend, I love Aji Mackerel, Japan Tai, White Tuna, Albacore, and .... ah- fuck, just give me the whole fucking thing.

While my preference is for nigiri, occasion I do get (and satisfy) my pangs for avocado & fake crab & teriyaki sauce & tempura shrimp-ladened roll. *dodges foodie bullets*

salmon and otoro are my favorites, but when it comes down to it I can eat way more salmon. Sushi Tomi in the Bay Area is an obscure little restaurant that serves the most beautiful melt-in-your-mouth salmon with the marbling you described. I eat it with my eyes closed.
